What Kills RSV on Surfaces?

Learning what kills RSV on surfaces and revamping your cleaning and disinfection plan can help protect your employees, customers and guests this winter. Medical experts are already calling 2023 a bad year for respiratory viruses, and more illness is predicted as we get further into winter. Hospitals in North Dakota and around the country are seeing an influx of patients with not just the flu and COVID, but also respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV. Most dangerous in young children, RSV can cause symptoms that are similar to a cold but may also include serious inflammation in the lungs.

How does RSV spread?

RSV is spread in three primary ways:

First, it can be spread through virus droplets expelled from an infected person’s sneeze or cough. When those droplets enter the mouth, eyes or nose of another person, the virus spreads.

Second, RSV can be spread by making direct contact with the virus, like kissing a child who is ill.

Third, RSV can be spread by touching a surface with the virus on it, then touching your face.

Generally, people who have RSV can become contagious up to two days before showing symptoms, and they may remain contagious for three to eight days. The virus can surface for hours on hard surfaces, including tables and other frequently-touched objects in facilities. On soft surfaces, like tissues and hands, the virus lives for shorter amounts of time.
