Many of us heard the term “monkeypox” for the first time recently as stories of the virus spreading around the world hit airwaves, but awareness of the virus actually stems back to 1958. That’s when the pox-like disease was first observed in colonies of research monkeys.
Today, cases of Monkeypox are being investigated in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Europe and other locations around the globe. While researchers are still learning about the virus, they believe that transmission occurs through close contact with an infected person, animal or materials that are contaminated with the virus. Transmission in humans primarily occurs through contact with contaminated linens or clothing and also through large respiratory droplets.
In response, the Environmental Protection Agency has added the Monkeypox virus to its emerging viral pathogen policy. This is formed in response to an emerging or novel virus when there is no current EPA-approved protocol in place.
